is it in the water? I also tried it twice in water and both times it smelled and got moldy, I guess yours got moldy too
You have to remove most of the lower leaves so they don’t rot in contact of the water, and the water has to be changed often so it stays clear
Y’all, you need to remove almost every bit of fruit from the base and allow these to dry a bit before trying to root.

Remove all fruit and then remove a couple layers of bottom leaves as well. Never cut the top off to do this- you should be able to just twist the crown off the fruit and then remove some leaves.
I’d remove the dead bottom leaves, I’d see if you have rot, if you do I’d start over.
Tips: Start with the freshest top you can find, change water often, make sure there is no flesh, dry it before putting in water.

Yup, I went through this myself. As others have said you need to cut back till you are cutting through only stem, no fruit remaining. When I tore off lower leaves I started seeing what looked like little nubs where I believe the roots grew from. Not sure if those will be present in every crown.
When I propped my pineapple I just stick it in dirt in the summer (chicago). Been a few years and I’m finally getting a fruit!

Gotta remove all the fruit (as that will just rot) but I also would give up on this entirely because the leaves are all practically dead. When you try with a new one, keep removing until all fruit is gone, look up a video to see what it will look like when it’s propagate ready

Abort, abort! Start afresh. Remove all fruit. The roots will sprout from between the leaves, no fruit necessary
So yes in set but no in lighting. It needs lots and lots of sun. I’ve grown lots of pineapples in Texas no problem I was in the Houston area just put some toothpicks in them and put them in water or put them straight into the ground like that. Sometimes just potting them first is the best option. But in the north I have never been able to grow one but I haven’t tried in dirt yet and i try and grow them inside. No it shouldn’t smell very bad it may mold a little but at some point you have to choose to try again.

i let mine dry out and then put it straight in dirt. it’s been chugging along ever since
