      Yeah, you can never plant them in the ground. I have them in large pots protected by bark and slug catchers, and they’re still somewhat destroyed.

      Haha yeahh it’s a shame I like that the sluggies enjoy them I tend to surround a nice impressive specimen by weaker looking dahlia plug plants.. they eat those instead

      More and more with the slugs this year I want to rig up some sort of electric barrier and connect to a car battery to fry the horrors

      You have lost this battle, cover the whole garden in petrol and light it up, its the only way to be sure.

      Use garlic to deter them. I find the stuff in jars added around the outside of the plant does the trick

      So far, ground coffee liberally sprinkled around the base of my plants seems to be working. So far…

      I’ve just come back inside from slug catching. I never bothered much in the past but I’ve stepped up patrols since they left my dahlias looking like OPs.

      OP – they’re just plants and well, the slugs are just being slugs.

      I came in from my garden 10 mins ago after moving a slug that is destroying my flowers. Slugs are annoying but I don’t want to kill them. Here’s what I’m doing instead:

      1. Lay down wood chip – done
      2. Sprinkle coffee beans around the base of plants – just did this 10 mins ago
      3. Planted lavender & chive flowers as they repel slugs – in progress
      4. Apply organic slug repellent pellets – due to arrive tomorrow
      5. Place garlic around the base – will try this tomorrow

      I have come to accept that nature will eventually balance things out: the increased slug population (assuming my deterrents fail) should attract natural predators such as hedgehogs who will eat them anyway.

      I noticed that since I put a compost bin in the bottom of my garden, fucking pricks don’t devour my plants as much

      Oh my goodness! I so would cry if these bastards did that to my dahlias. Don’t feel too bad getting the salt pot on the ones I came across yesterday morning after the rain. FYI, I did bin then afterwards.

      Crumbs. I’m from the UK, which is why I lurk in this sub, but all my gardening experience has been in Australia where I now live. I get toads and lizards in my garden, and I have never seen a slug in it as a result. Plenty of other things eat my plants, but not slugs. I had no idea they could do so much damage so quickly!

      Mental isn’t it at least as some consolation it’s a country wide phenomenon,
      beer traps and night safaris is the way in my garden it’s usually one culprit on each plant

      It is a bad year for slugs. They have to eat though that that isn’t much consolation. I’m up at dawn every morning, picking off slugs & putting in a bucket & taking round a couple of roads to the park & dumping the slugs in a hedge. No harm done to the slugs & my plants are thriving. Does take determination. Always worst after rain.

      I run them through with a wooden skewer then place the slug kabob like a totem as a warning to the rest of the little gits!

      Christ they’ve stripped it clean! I can only assume dahlias are a delicacy for slugs. My condolences!

      Absolute bastards. I bought 2 trays of 6 in the half off half dead section a while back £1 a tray they may have well labelled them as slug food I knew they didn’t stand a chance.

      I am the weirdo in my back garden at 11pm with a head torch, a pair of tongs and a pot. Got 60 on my first night, after consistently doing it for a few weeks I only average about 10.

      I have to say it’s actually quite fun now!

      I didn’t realise that Dahlia was on the list of slug attractive plants. I bought 5 different Dahlia bare roots. They were slow growing & then disappeared 😒.

      I might dig them up, pot them with copper tape & blackberry barbed stems.

      That’s my garden too.

      They don’t hardly touch the pellets. I (rubber gloved) hand pick them off almost every night. All sizes. Over 5 weeks I have removed over 200..(Big garden). Dunno where they come from..

      Delphiniums, rudbeckias, astilbe, young lupins, young sun flowers, my freakin fig tree !!, caught one chomping on lavender buds last night !..That’s a first.

      All targeted

      I use another redditor’s tip and drown ’em in a jar with water and a bit of fairy liquid. Then in the garden waste bin they go.

      I’m getting tired of the routine now.
