May I be the first to say he needs a bigger pot. Toms are hungry buggers. If you keep them in pots have a tray filled with water underneath.

They are quite dark but I think that mostly varies depending on variety. Seems like a healthy plant, well done!

At some point you’ll need to cut off the main shoot to stop in continuing upwards- this’ll help it put more time into the flower/fruits. Given the time of year and crappy summer, it’ll need doing relatively soon, but you want more sets of flowers to appear first.

One thing I would say is make sure the tie that is used to attach it to the cane isn’t tight, because the stem will get fatter as it grows. I can’t see for sure if it’s too tight but worth checking.

Maybe also check underneath the pot for roots coming out as tomatoes are fast growers and if we have enough Summer left, might end up in a 30-35cm pot!

PS also look at pulling out the side shoots- will be easier if you Google rather than listen to me explain it.

PPS weekly fertiliser now that you have flowers

Welcome to the vegetable growing world! Tom looks great. Some varieties do have darker leaves but purpling or other discolouration can indicate a nutrient deficiency. He looks like he needs potting on into a bigger container so I’d recommend buying a slightly bigger pot and popping new compost in for him. Both the new compost & a bigger pot will be helpful!

Once Tom and your other new tomato friends start to flower, you can also start feeding them once a week with a little Tomato Feed to help them along. Don’t feel this is essential though for your first time – keep it simple if you want to and just enjoy the process. 🙂

Oh, and finally, they will probably need some support as they grow bigger and taller (unless they’re pot/dwarf varieties which will stay small).

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask!

Rose pots are good for the next stage they are tall, get them extra roots growing from the little hairs on the stem.
