  1. Do the roots come out of draining holes?

Is the pot full of roots (more roots than soil)?

Personally I’d agree with your mom. That is a big pot and monsteras are known to live in surprisingly small pots, because it’s root size that defines pot size.

What that plant needs is more light and a sturdy pole.

When it comes to soil monstera prefer well-draining soil and pot. Mine lives in a mix of regular potting soil, orchid bark and leca. Chunky is what you are after.

If you ghink he looks top heavy, set that pot inside a larger decorative pot.

In a pot, soil needs roots to take up the moisture. When the pot is too big, the extra soil without roots stays way to wet for monstera. Monstera roots need air as well as moisture, soil is kep damp, not wet. If soil is too wet, it stops growing, then leavrs turn yellow and fall off. Then things start to rot, its not pretty.

So like others here have said, we keep pot size small, and don’t repot until there are roots escaping from the drainage holes. Then we go up 2-5 cm in width, no more.
