If it’s Privet you can prune it right back.

It should recover fine as long as otherwise healthy.

It depends on what species it is! I have a conifer type hedge and unfortunately can’t cut it back to the right width as it doesn’t grow back on old wood, so with stuff like that u just have to always prune it to keep its shape.

Once u know what species it is then it’ll be easier to get an answer

It will take some hard work but I would personally cut the middle out and pull the two halves back together.

If you use a biodegradable twine you won’t need to worry about it down the line.

That’s privet which can be cut back fairly hard, however it looks like it has a lot of ivy in it. I would cut the corner off this year so the top resembles half a trapizoid at the top. Do it from half way between the diamond lattice portion of your fence. I’d also cut those big ivy stems and pull it out to give the privet more of a chance.

Next year I’d angle the whole thing back so the sun can get to the bottom.

Just be aware once you hard prune it, it will throw out lots of spindlly 2′ long shoots in the summer so be prepared for lots of regular tip pinching to get it to fill out in the centre.

The general statement is that privet is indestructible. Whilst there is evidence of good new growth further up the hedge, that closest to the camera seems smothered by ivy. A house near me has a Hawthorn hedge, smothered in ivy. In reality it is a Hawthorn scaffold for the ivy. The ivy needs to be removed, so cut the hedge hard back and remove as much ivy as possible. See it regrow, remove it. Then 🤞 the privet regrows. Further up where the ivy hasn’t smothered it, won’t be a problem.

  7. If it’s yours cut as much as you want. Cut back to the stump line and reduce the height aswell as its width. Might need a lopper and hand saw for thicker bits. All depends on your neighbours.

Thank you all for the comments and advice.

I don’t know if it’s my hedge or not, I get on very well with the neighbors so I will speak with them first, but I don’t really want to make the hedge shorter, just narrower at the top.

    Plan is:

    1) speak with neighbour,

    2) kill the ivy

    3) trim it back.

    Thanks all.

It’ll be fine. I’d trim a max of a third off (height or width) and it’ll regrow well from that.

Cutting back to at least 12″ below soil level is good.
