You might just wait to see if they do have any interest. My cats never showed any interest in my plants except for one pony tail palm which they thought was grass so they would try to eat the leaves. Other than that, they never dug in any of pots.
if they do show an interest… the only thing that stops my cat from biting my house plants is keeping them out of her reach 🙁

I would move ones that are toxic to cats to a different location. Mine would take random bites out of my plants and then leave them alone. 😤
I remember a while back someone said they took plastic forks to make a barrier in the smaller plants lol. Like the handle is in the dirt and the tines face outward to make a little fence

It depends for sure if the cats have any interest but to be safe, move the ones that are known to be toxic (aloe) out of reach. If they do show interest, hanging pots or high shelves where they cannot reach are your only options.
You can buy a bitter citrus spray that is supposed to discourage cats from chewing on plants. You just spray it on the plant. I did this with my cat until she turned out to be uninterested in my plants.
Plant stands have been very helpful to me and hanging baskets as long as they are high enough to not been seen as a toy
Grow some cat grass for them specifically and hopefully they will munch on that. Mine ignore all the other plants because they like the grass
The biggest things for me have been keeping plants off the floor.
Lightweight plants I keep in lightweight planters and hang from windows/curtain rods. Just have to be observant about weight limits.
Depending on the depth and sealant quality of the window sill below, I’ll also keep any smaller, non-vining plants there as well to prevent kitty from jumping up.
Some cats aren’t deterred by this, but ultimately all domestic cats are ambush predators. Meaning, they are going to try and avoid making excess noise and knocking over things once they understand their surroundings.
Others have suggested shelves as well, can concur. I ended up using a gift card to buy an open concept “armoire” for about $60 a few years ago that holds about 10 plants or so.
Lastly – and this entirely depends on each cat and their relationships with your partner – introduce kitty to plants to satisfy the curiosity. Cats don’t see in the same definition as we do so literally everything is blurry, and they are small and need to feel safe in their territory.
Whatever your partner’s “no” signals are, they should absolutely use those to set boundaries with unsafe plants. Just make sure to have easy distraction toys to redirect the cats away from the plants.

I got a new cat last month & have 150 plants in my one bedroom apartment. She hasn’t touched a single one besides rubbing along a big one on the floor.
I have no qualms about telling them off and spraying them with water if they don’t listen (the cat not the plant). They learn very fast, but the downside is now they know how to piss you off on command and they might use that to manipulate you for food. Lol good luck
It’s annoying but I have 3 that will eat all of my plants. I have them on tables and shelves that are so full of plants they don’t even try to jump up there. I also use tall wooden stools as cheap plant stands.
Cats don’t like strong odors. I used clove, peppermint, or citrus oil (non-diluted) and rubbed it on the outside rim of the planters. They won’t go within a couple feet of them.
The only plant I cannot keep is a spider plant because it is in the same family as cat nip, and it is basically irresistible to them. They murdered mine within a week…
Have you considered switching to Bonsai Kittens?
I hung all my plants from hooks/curtain rods. I made simple macramé pot holders and used S-hooks.
Not a cat but my dog likes to paw at the dirt in our plants so we took some of the clear plastic water basins you can put under a pot, cut a circle in then wide enough for the base of the plant but covering any exposed soil and then placed it on each pot. Keeps him out.

I put little pointy wooden skewers in my big pots.
Sprinkled coffee grounds over the soil.
And bought some catgrass for them.
Nowadays none of the above are necessary, but I still buy them catgrass sometimes.
Apple bitter spray! You can find some on Amazon or at a pet store
My cat started an all out war against my plants for a week straight when I started to get slightly obsessed with my plant collection. Once I started to give her more attention/pets in the morning before watering the plants she stopped. No issues since
I make my own pepper spray.. boil water, add red pepper flakes, chili powder let it boil and simmer. Cool completely, add to sprayer bottle. They leave my plants alone. I do have to re- spray every few months. It doesn’t harm my plants at all. Sometimes I’ve added orange peels too.
To prevent them from digging I put a layer of hydroton clay pebbles in my pots. Works great

I have 5 cats and I HIGHLY recommend having a room that they aren’t allowed in. That’s where I keep my plants that are toxic to them. Additionally, floating shelves and hanging baskets are lifesavers. If there’s not a ton of light where you want to place your plants, there are individual plant lights for relatively cheap on Amazon. Don’t forget to check the ASPCA list of toxic and non-toxic houseplants so that your bf’s furry friends stay safe and healthy. Best of luck!
Try keeping the cats in mason jars. It will keep them fresh and prevent them from knocking over plants.
My roommates had two cats, only one room was kept closed with the plants! No cats – at all. Not sure if you are in one room, I’d keep it maybe in the bathroom and keep that shut?
I saw someone else do this and did it myself with good results- plastic forks upside down stuck in the soil around the pot rim, so the pointy prong ends are sticking up. Makes a little fence around the plant so kitty gets poked, not hurt but if they’re like mine, lose interest now that its not easy. Good luck!!
Get rid of the cats
I have vases that i can hang onto the wall. Hanging up plants out of reach. These only really work for smaller plants. Deep purple lily
My cat thinks every table and shelf surface belongs to him, if there are plants there they are toys to be batted off his property. He’s not interested in eating them, he just wants to bat them around. He’s an 11-month old half Maine coon and quite large. Repellent spray doesn’t work very well, it takes diversion from me to get him away. I’ve had to cover the front of my grow light plant shelf with cardboard so he can’t see the plants…but neither can I :(. He’s slowly learning that no means NO, and when I get out the Vicks jar he’d better scoot. The best you can really do is keep everything out of reach and actively divert.
Spray the plant’s leaves lightly with vegetable oil (top sides only; not underside). Dust lightly with cayenne or habanero powder.
Mix together cold coffee, lavender and rosemary scent, peppermentand spray the leaves.
If it’s the soil they’re ‘bothering’, sprinkle the soil with moth ball granules or crushed mothballs or even the mothballs themselves. Cover it with a layer of pebbles or crushed stone. It will discourage the cats’ scratching or digging. One can spray the rocks or pebbles with the liquid deterrents too.
Scents dissipate over time, refresh them, especially the liquids.
I bought several fake plants, and do you know that my cat still tried to eat them?? 😭
The soil is what my cat was after. Read up that coffee grounds deter cats, but most Reddit posts said it didn’t work. Did it anyway since it gave nutrients to the soil. Next, I covered the soil with a layer of river rocks so he couldn’t access the soil. Lastly, got a thin strip of balsa wood, cut it to shape, let some peppermint essential oil soak into the balsa wood, and stuck it into the pot. The kitty hasn’t dared to approach the pot since

You CAN’T! I have Tried everything! So my Plant got Dumped out in the yard! two were dead because of my kittens.. So I give up! all these “REMEDIES” ARE BS They are up on shelves, they ump , climb or anything to get to them, I tried all kinds of things lemon, apples cider, vinager.. So Unless I put them up near the ceiling I can’t have plants.. plant s and pots are thrown out into the yard
I haven’t done it yet but I’ve been considering buying a hutch or fish tank for my plants when I move. I just need to figure out how to get my grow lamp attached.
My cat hunts plants. Like makes a beeline the second they are in the room and tries to mow them down. My solution has been hanging plants only. With your larger existing ones, I’ve seen some pretty cool ikea-type hutches that have been repurposed, and also DIY hanging shelves in front of the window (like boards threaded on knotted ropes if that makes sense). I plan to try that for my succulents. Also clustering them on narrow shelves so they don’t have a place to jump up could help. Or maybe you’ll be lucky and they won’t be little monsters like mine.
