/r/arborists will give you better info but yeah damage and early rot in a crevice like that at the base where there will be more moisture, fungus, and bugs is not great. It still has many many years left in it though. What kind of tree?
Right side looks healthy. Upper trunk looks healthy. I think you are fine. Keep clean around base so you are not accelerating rot on the dead part.
