Grapes should have one or two leaders per plant. You can probably see where it’s really thick – that’s what gets kept from one year to the next. Maybe 8 feet of length to a leader. Remove everything else in early spring while the vine is still dormant.
You can do a little bit of summer pruning once fruit has set, so the plant isn’t wasting energy on new vine and leaves when it should be focused on fruit. Just take what’s growing past the fruit, but not too much.
I have 40+ year old concord grape vines on my property & the first February moved in it had been growing many years without pruning. Took loppers to the edges of the entire trellis, leaving some shoots of the previous years grown off main trunk, leaving only a few bud nodules on each.
Then used my extended loppers to reach through middle ceiling of trellis & cut a straight-ish line down breaking up all the long vines overhead.
After this, could grab a corner and the freed tangled sections could be easily pulled down to the ground.
For ongoing maintenance/growing season you can control the suckers or new wild growth that goes in unwanted directions, or to thin out for airflow. In the early stages the vines can be easily hand broken off.
Ideally once grapes are growing mid season, you’ll want to remove any leaves blocking sun from reaching the grape clusters. During the early season, be sure to make stuffed grape leaves which will contribute to natural thinning & improved air flow!
Oh & if you feel the main trunks need more structure holding them to the trellis after trimming, I usually just use some cotton twine to loosely tie around some 1 year old vines to hold it steady from high winter winds.
You can also use the spent old woody branches

for DIY wreaths. Cost effective & wonderful decor for mailboxes, light posts, front door etc! Especially if you have pine nearby 🙂
PS: expect a bird nest or two every year! Embrace the natural pest control cuties in return for some taxes on grape harvest
