Yes, it drops a lot after it flowers, but it’s worth it to have several weeks of stunning purple over my back patio.

If people are upset their yard became beautifully purple for a couple weeks, maybe they need to look within and find their problem.

I’ve got one in my front yard. Our entire street turns purple when they flower it’s beautiful.

Yes. DO NOT park your car under one. They drip sap or nectar and it’s a pain to get off.

    5. The flowers you see on the sidewalk are probably one day’s worth, judging by color. If you can get out there daily it’s no big deal. The flowers generally drop for several weeks.

They are super slippery on concrete at this stage. Next stage is purple and brown goop on the sidewalk. Also very slippery but also stinky and unsightly. It sticks to the concrete and takes effort to get the flowers up. Not just a simple sweep or rake.

Source: One of my childhood jobs was to clean the flowers of the jacaranda off of the driveway.

they are a magnificent tree…but fuck yeah, they’re messy. Worth it? I guess so

I’d say it probably depends on what you’ve got under the tree. Flowers dropping on garden beds and lawn is fine, dropping on your car and driveway is annoying once they start to decompose.

Be mindful what’s in the ground underneath too, their roots can be problematic if you plant too close to a structure.

Looks like a mess to look forward too. Does it smell as amazing as it looks?

      People can be nuts.

I worked for a while in a fancy-pants garden center. We carried these amazing fuscia trees. A lady was talking to me about them and said she hated them because they drop petals all over the place.

Another customer asked me for flowers that don’t attract bees.

Many customers didn’t know WHAT DIRECTION THEIR YARD FACED.

I heard a lot of stupid shit.

FYI in case you’re interested there is a white flowering variant available as well. Different but just as beautiful.

Only tree I cannot abide around my home is mulberry. They grow like weeds and make a godawful mess. I’m happy they exist, they are native, and feed many birds and insects. But I don’t want one around my home.

One thing no one’s mentioning about jacarandas here is that they smell kind of like cat pee. I’m not sure if it’s the sap/nectar or the what, but I always notice it. Personally, that would be my main concern over any mess it might drop periodically. They’re so pretty besides that.

I have one. I’ve never in my life thought purple flowers covering my lawn was “a mess.” They’re gone the next time I mow anyways. I should add that mine is not a prolific bloomer like the one in the photo. And it’s in my backyard.

It’s so bad. Purple then brown slime on the ground. Also super slippery

I have one in my front yard. They’re beautiful yes but what you’ve heard is not wrong.

The flowers drop en masse and halfway disintegrate and turn brown when they fall so it’s not really this beautiful purple carpet and you can’t just rake them up. if you have a good mower it can suck them up but you have to do it near every other day to keep up. Also they can stain wood/cars/concrete/whatever they land on.

I love the tree, it’s just a lot of work for those few weeks when it’s dropping flowers.

[edit: as an added note, I’ve got a couple shoots im air layering currently and if you’re local to so-cal dm me and I’ll give you one for free when they get their roots going]

When a carpet of lavender flowers is a mess. I wish my yard was that messy.

So long as it’s not over your driveway you should be a happy Jacaranda owner

I had one int he front yard now they have spread and I have three in front one on the side and one out the back.I never planted any of them.Unfortunately, they dont prune well if you cut a branch, it will just compensate by sending a straight shoot cut, straight up to the sky.

    20. Yes, and they also smell like piss. Everyone thinks our downtown is soaked in urine but it’s the jacarandas

    21. I work in development and remove them anytime a landscape architects puts them on a plan. I’ve got one in my back yard. They look pretty for a couple weeks a year, then proceed to drop all their flowers, then in a few months seed pods, and in a few months billions of tiny leaves, and in the winter brittle branches.

      Hard pass.

    22. Critical-Star-1158 on

And the seed pods, and the bazillion leaves, and the stems…..

I’m from a jacaranda heavy region and no, it’s not really that bad for the beauty you get. I’m actually fond of their unique smell also, but I don’t hear that from other people. However, I wouldn’t use as a shade tree for a drive way, front porch or patio, you will be annoyed by the dropping at bloom time. But if you have the space to let the flowers fall in a more natural area or even lawn, the flowers disappear and go back to nature fast. They have pods that fall also, but they are large and easy to remove. Honestly most trees and gardens require effort. Just place it appropriately.

I’d rather clean up after a tree than humanity, I’ve done both. Trees are worth it in my opinion.

Jacarandas are gorgeous, but the falling purple flowers make a big, messy cleanup lovely to look at, annoying to maintain.

    26. Definitely never park your car under it. Other than that I think they’re beautiful.

    27. It is a complete mess and very sticky. It’s hard to get off your car or anything else. That said if you can plant it so that it grows over grass or a garden definitely go for it. They’re gorgeous.

    28. Purple, purple everywhere! So much love for allll the purple. Yes I’ve had these trees and if ever I return to a climate that makes them possible I will have them again!

Yes, some cleanup is required, eventually you want to sweep up the purple. Having the tree is worth it. It brightens neighborhoods and makes people happy.
