Very sorry to say its dying. It’s hard to say exactly why but I’d suggest looking around the base of the tree for any form of fungus/mushroom which would indicate a disease. You may be able to identify the problem then find a solution. Its not likely but looking at the image, it seems the dead areas are worse alongside the path, maybe a weedkiller has been sprayed on it by accident or the roots were cut back for whatever reason.

It does seem the tree has put on new growth this year in looking at your pictures so you may be able to save it but the branches that have no green growth on will not recover.

I think its a type of Juniper so may be worth a bit of further research there. Good luck!

It’s dying I’m afraid . Conifers like this should remain green all year round. The very dry weather this year has affected lots of trees and hedges particularly in built up areas where hard surfaces increase temperatures and dry the air out. You’ll have to take it out.
