Commenting to remember to check what others suggest 🙂
‘weeds’ are good for bees,. leave them.
Looks like dandelion and possibly a dock. A selective weedkiller will kill the broadleaves without harming the grass. However, the dock won’t thrive in a regularly mown lawn and will be out competed by grass in a year or two, and dandelions are wonderful wildflowers that attract lots of bees and insects during ‘no mow may’. They make taproots that can regrow from low down if the top part is damaged, but if you keep taking off the top 10cm or so, they will be out-competed by the grass once it’s had time to fully establish.
There are plenty of ‘weed’ seeds in the soil seedbank, that will continuously come up whenever you disturb the soil.
You won’t be able to get rid of weeds permanently.
You can either keep pulling them up by hand or spray them with weed killer.
The latter option tends to last a bit longer, but it also harms wildlife.
Ultimately, it depends on whether you want a perfectly manicured lawn or not. I’ve learned to live with some weeds and just do a bit of manual weeding now and then to stop things from getting out of control in the areas I like to keep tidy.
Good soil health and regular mowing in those areas also help the grass compete with the weeds.
Don’t bother with weedkillers like some people are suggesting.
A) a monoculture lawn is not good.
B) herbicides are terrible for all.
If you want to maintain lawn health and reuse the number of weeds, I would suggest investing in a mulching lawnmower. If it’s out of your price range most newer lawn mowers will even come with a plug so it can mulch cuttings. Saves you paying for a green bin (unless you compost) and mulching will reduce weed coverage and keep your grass healthy without the need for chemicals.
I’ve found the most effective way is to weed by hand. I use a pocket knife and get the blade down next to the long tap root and loosen the soil then out they come, a lot easier with wet soil and smaller weeds, so best to get to them early. Some smaller weeds can just be plunked out with fingers, but the knife helps get the root as well.
I’ve used a weed and seed herbicide in the past but always a bit hit and miss.
Hands and knees and pull them, or learn to live with them
Where you have exposed soil you’ll have weeds. Whether thats on your lawn or in your flower bed. If you can remove access to the soil then ultimately you remove the ability for weeds to grow.
Your lawn has too much soil showing / the grass isn’t growing dense enough to crowd out the weeds from growing. Depending where you live you might be able to get some grass growing now if you sow it immediately, but if not you’ll need to ‘overseed’ in the spring. Once its established make sure you cut it regularly and it should start to thicken up.
If you want 0 weeds then yes you’ll need some sort of weed killer – but i’m sure thats not the case and if you instead spend some time improving the grass health next spring you’ll have a beautiful looking lawn and you won’t notice the odd weed which makes it through.
If you can spend a little bit of time improving the lawn and mowing it each week in the summer you’ll never have to spend time weeding – and for me thats a deal i’m very happy to make.
Two types of weedkiller:
1. Granules that you broadcast on the grass, usually in Spring, just before it is about to rain – see box for exact application details. This works really well if you do it once or twice each spring. It works by killing weeds & moss and feeding the grass helping it to grow into the spaces that used to have those weeds and moss in them.
2. A weed killer spray that doesn’t harm grass. But this will need a separate spray bottle and is more work to do, so I would avoid that until you’ve tried the granules for a year or two.
[https://amzn.eu/d/iHgRqZ1](https://amzn.eu/d/iHgRqZ1) I’ve been using this spray for the past couple of years, and it’s done a great job keeping weeds under control after my spring lawn renovation.
That said, it’s worth remembering that the key to preventing weeds from returning is maintaining a healthy, well-cared-for lawn.

Yep your doing right thing hand pull with knife but you need to reseed you need more grass that will stop them growing so much
Get a robot mower a let it go out everyday.
Once established you’d mow regularly during the summer which will weaken the weeds but you would need to put down a weed killer too. See if mosses are growing on it by the spring and add an iron sulfate treatment as that will kill the moss and support healthy grass.
You’ve simply disturbed the seed bank in the soil, so weeds are growing. It happens. Keeping a mono culture requires a lot of weeding hence weedkiller.
Aaah, this is the joy of gardening, it needs tending to every week of every year 🙂
Coming to Reddit for advice on weeds is almost pointless as most will tell you to just leave a ‘lawn’ full of weeds. It’s not a crime to want a nice lawn. I’d recommend treating with Aftercut or similar once a year in the Spring. It will kill off most of the weeds and promote the grass. Continue to pull up any larger weeds by hand and fill in any gaps by disturbing the soil and re-seeding. The more you establish the grass the less likely you are to get weeds, you’ll never get rid of them all but you can certainly get this lawn looking it’s best with some effort.
We just mow regularly so they can never get too big. Every now and then I’ll hand weed a few out but life’s too short for ‘perfect’ grass unless you run a golf course.
Hate to say it but unless you dig out 6 inches of your whole lawn and replace with some kind of miracle soil that prevents weeds but encourages grass, you are never going to be weed free. If it were me (and could be bothered) I would spend time leveling the lawn with fine dressing soil, seed like there’s no tomorrow and then just keep a tight cut lawn. You won’t really see the weeds. We have three young boys, free range chickens and guinea pigs so we gave up on the perfect lawn years ago. Ours would probably horrify you 😅
I had this. I treated the lawn and then over seeded it with some decent grass seeds. The new grass grows up and although it doesn’t get rid of them it does look better than it did.
