Very rarely is “barrow-fulls of well rotted manure” the wrong answer.

You can never go wrong with adding composted organic material to any type of soil.

You could just turn in some compost and fertiliser pellets with a fork and it would probably be enough.

It depends if you are looking to work with the soil that you have got and find plants that will be happy as it is, or if you want to have a wider variety of plants to choose from. It’s slightly less maintenance to go for plants that would like the conditions than putting compost/manure down. Also, you could go for a mid way house and just mulch around those plants that need a bit extra. In my opinion, there is no right or wrong just personal preference.

If you keep it free draining all the Mediterranean style plants work well, if you add manure/compost etc you will be able to plant most things and probably not need to water as much as left as is, especially if you mulch
