That’s YOUR tap water. Others have vast differences in the quality of water delivered to their abode. Personally, I’d have white soil on top from mineral build up in a matter of weeks. Its not a myth, its a solid care practice for many, with exemptions like your water.
I think the issue is the ambient humidity here, your humidity is great because you’re outside and your plants love it. Other people who grow calatheas inside struggle to grow them because their humidity is much lower. I can’t speak for the tap water issue because I’ve never found a problem with tap water. I have hard water and my plants don’t seem to care, I assume because I have high indoor ambient humidity.
Apart from ornata of course. Mine was so unhappy the few months I tried it then it got spider mites and infested like 20 other plants. So enjoy it, yours is beautiful.
What’s your local water hardness? I doubt my calathea would enjoy my hard tap water…
This just isn’t true. Everyone’s tap water is different.

I’ve always watered all my plants with tap water. Even Calatheas I get calcium deposits on pots. They will eventually get used to it. Even if there is die back at first
My water has fluoride in it
This post is sooo misleading. Please, know that majority of tap water is NOT suitable for palms or Calatheas due to high chlorine and fluoride levels

ALL the plants I’ve got in the marantaceae family get tap and our water is hard af here in Kansas. Just keep them somewhat evenly watered and they won’t disintegrate on you lmao sorry bout it

The only myth is thinking in absolutes. Every species has different growing conditions and every person has a different house, in different cities in different countries.
Every one has different ambient humidity, water quality, light that they can provide, outside temperature, etc.
Just because YOU can grow your plant in a specific way means absolutely nothing about how anyone else can, that’s an anecdote not a guideline.
Another demeaning post from someone who thinks that the way things are in their yard is the way things are for everyone.

I think it’s a whole different ballgame when your plants are outside. Having lived in both Florida and temperate climates, I feel like I have a pretty informed take on the matter. While there are other challenges with pests and light exposure, everything grows faster, bigger and generally more easily outdoors.
Your calathea thrives on anything bc you live in Florida. If you live in 7% humidity in the cold mountains you will have a very different type of care needed
Idk maybe. I have a monstera deliciosa in direct sunlight and it loves it and thrives, but I wouldnt say that always works and wasn’t a happy acclimating accident on my part
