Give it a pinch. If it’s soft and squishy, it’s rotten. if it’s pretty firm, it’s OK to keep (or trim). Escaping roots may mean the plant is ready for a bigger pot. Doesn’t hurt to take a look to check, although it’s not advised to repot new plants for at least a month – until they have had some time to adjust to the new environment (different light and humidity).
