It will not drop fruit itself so that it has the right amount for its branches to stop them getting damaged- you need to thin the fruit out, ie take some off with secateurs, so that the branches are not damaged by the weight of the fruit and also have air around the ones remaining on the branches to help stop them getting fungal diseases. As it gets bigger it will be able to cope better with the weight of the fruit on its branches as the branches get thicker with time.
There’s way too many for such a young tree. Remove at least half. They’re supposed to drop fruit in June, but clearly not in this case!
It doesn’t look like you’ve staked it. You’ll need to until it gets around 5ft.
thin the fruit
stake the tree
I’d be tempted to remove the gravel and replace it with an organic mulch, maybe even plant flowers around the tree
Do not stress over it
They sometimes drop fruit as they’re developing during a dry spring, but if you’ve been watering it then that wouldn’t happen, it probably will survive, the fruit is heavy and this will always happen to a certain degree, next year as the fruit is developing just keep an eye on it, if you think they’re overcrowded then snip off the smaller ones, once this year’s harvest has gone from the tree put a stake in the ground to keep it up right, come the autumn prune this year’s growth back about half to two thirds, then going forward repeat year on year it will strengthen the branches
you want a stake at a 35 degree angle connected near the top so it can still wobble a bit in the wind. a good strong stake.
Also i would remove the gravel thats directly touching the stem, like 10cm around it, so it can breath better
Sounds harsh but remove all the fruit. Same next year too, let the tree get established and bigger first.
