It looks like suckers coming up from the roots of a nearby tree or shrub.

    2. It’s a sucker from a plum tree – just mow over them . Or dig them up with as much root intact possible if you want to transplant them.

Do you get squirrels in the garden?
They could be burying hazel nuts which are now popping up…

    4. Aha! Another query I have with my garden solved by casually perusing this sub. And yes, I have a shrub that produces some kind of plum-ish fruits nearby and was wondering what the hell these were haha.

    5. I have a few of these and the neighbour has a plum tree just 3m away. The roots are at a right angle to the stem when I pull them out as in the 2nd pic too. That explains why they are tough to pull out. Question is then how do I stop them coming up from nextdoor?
