Rose sawfly will defoliate plants over a night if they have hatched in significant numbers. I personally would take them off put them in a spare plant watering tray and let the local wren or robin have a buffet. They are devastatingly voracious larvae they tend to specialise particular plants so may crawl back to the rose overnight.
