After failing with basil for several years, I finally had a good year; I froze a lot of the leaves to use in cooking, maybe a gallon bag which lasted through the following winter

You can cut off bunches and hang them to dry so you have some for the winter!

Make sure to chop before flowering if you plan to eat it this year. Once it flowers it impacts the taste, but you can take seeds from it and grow again next year.

Is there anything that you’re doing in particular that’s helping it grow? I bought a basil plant and it doesn’t seem to be thriving even in direct sunlight. I was hoping it would grow just nice and tall as yours so I could propagate it into several other basil plants but that doesn’t seem to be working out very well.

Mine is also doing well this year- though not as impressive as yours! It’s keeping just enough for us to eat, and I pinch it back some to keep it from getting leggy. Nice job!

It looks great but you should prune it asap!

Pinch off the leaves at the place where newer leaves start, leaving several healthy pairs on the stalk, and the plant will really bush out. But don’t prune more than 30% of the plant at once or it’ll shock it.
Congratulations on that beauty!

Needs more water. The leaves should be more horizontal

Lmk if you want about 100 japanese beetles to share it with. They love my basil and I would be more than happy to ship some of them away from here

Please explain to me why my basil bolts after two months and only 10 inches high. A harvest a ton in that small amount of time I have never had a plant that grows into a tree like these people. What am I doing wrong lol

Prune it. It is close to showing seed heads. If you prune it back it will continue to shower you with a great bounty.
I learned from trial and error gardening.
If you prune top, it will bush out. If you prune from sides it will top out. Let it get bushy and harvest regularly. Share the bounty with neighbors and friends.
I love Basil! The smell is intoxicating.
Basil is the diva of the herbs.
Allow to go to seed in fall. Let it fall back into earth. Those seeds will show themselves the next year.

If you want, you can prune it and water propagate cuttings for more plants. If you look on the longer pieces of stem, you’ll see places where it kind of branches out in the two spots away from the main stem. Cut the main stem and leave the two branches alone. You can use what you cut or put the stem in water in indirect sun and it’ll root for a new plant

It’s trying to flower. Give it the big chop and cut 1/3 of the plant back just above where two leaves branch.

I’ve had a lot of success propagating basil. Cut some sprigs, put them in water for a few weeks and you can grow more. Looks great.
