Was habe ich falsch gemacht?

Depending on the variety that could be its normal size. If not, it could be user error which is totally normal for first time growers for numerous reasons.

Some varieties do better than others in the UK.
Soil/Compost may have been lacking in nutrients.
      Planted too late.
      Not enough sun.
      Not enough/too much water.

Also it looks like it was harvested too late. The stalks should not be totally dry. The skins appear to be splitting already. Also the growths are not an issue. Members of the allium family have some very strange ways of reproducing and sometimes they crop up when you least expect.

Don’t be discouraged! We have all been there.

    2. You pulled it up at the right time (actually a bit late, you still want some green leaf) so leaving it longer would not result in larger bulbs. Getting decent sized garlic bulbs isn’t easy, they like a feed, hate any competition from weeds and appreciate a good watering at the right time gradually increasing as the weather warms up in spring and then dryer closer to harvest. I’m no expert but this year I did manage to get supermarket sized bulbs that are actually useable. Going to give them a bit more TLC next year as I want big bulbs, less of a faff to peel! I also lift quite a lot of it as green garlic so I can use the whole bulb and bottom 1/3 of the stem. Makes a lovely soup.
