Five years ago, I stopped mowing. I have two orchids that appeared. They had probably always been there.

      – Common spotted orchid, like yours

      – Common twayblade

      That’s stunning!

I am doing exactly this. For the last few years I leave the front lawn. I strim.and mow the edges in a wavy line to give a tidyish appearance.

Initially because it was too anxiety inducing to deal with it. Then I started spotting new flowers arriving and the last 3 yrs We’ve had wild orchids, birds foot trefoil, ox eye daisies and various others turn up.

I was looking up yesterday about how to add to it with seed and was considering spreading yellow rattle in early September.

Apparently it’s semi parasitic to grass which weakens it and makes it easier for other species to get a foot in the door.

I’m not sure if that is advisable or not.

It’s lovely though, just seeing it naturally happen.
