    1. Other than the slope, I don’t really see anything wrong here, if the mowers not getting the grass sticking out at the edges, a strimmer should do it?

If it’s just the appearance, go around the edge with a spade or any flat kind of tool, creating a sharp looking edge can make a decent difference, it won’t last too long though.

Assuming I’m seeing the angles right, mowing the slope must be a nuisance. Wouldn’t it be easier to just flatten the main area and have a raised area at the back edge?
Just keep grass on the lower flat bit and turn the higher areas into flower beds or use the slopes as flower beds too.

I have a strimmer which can turn the head so it cuts vertically. It has a little set of wheels so you just push it along the edge of the grass and the strimmer cuts the grass in a nice neat line. Works a treat!

    3. You could really improve the garden by adding some deep beds. It might be easier to mow soft verges and you could have biggish perennial shrubs etc to add visual interest. I’d join it up with the other bit of bed and have a lovely deep border to your lawn. Then you can grow lovely big stuff like cardoons, lilacs, choisya, miscanthus, ceanothus, maybe a climbing rose going up a planting obelisk. Lovely!
