    1. You have a lovely mature garden that’s evergreen, absolutely no need to do anything and why would you remove perfectly good bushes?

Get your waste disposal route sorted – check your councils website for green waste services. Buy a decent pair of secateurs (£15+) at some point so you’re ready to do a bit of pruning in autumn. DO NOT cut down anything in spring or summer – it’s nesting season and it’s a real dick move to make birds homeless right now. When it gets to autumn if anything’s very overgrown you could trim it back a bit but honestly it looks fine for now – it isn’t trying to take over the patio for example.

Iwould dead head the hydrangeas in the right hand side of the main photo but it’s not essential. You can do this now.

Looks to me like you have an empty bed closer to the house. You could plant some stuff in that which is to your taste. If you’re very new to the house it might be worth waiting a season to see if anything emerges (not all plants will be visible just yet but should come up in next few weeks). Or you can just take out what’s in there, refresh the soil (maybe dig in one or two 70litre bags of manure or compost). It looks shady so maybe have a look online for UK plants that tolerate shade. Things like heuchera and perennial geraniums should last for years.

You won’t have a lot of options for planting alongside the shrubs as these beds will be very dry. You could try putting in stuff like erigeron (also called fleabane or Mexican daisy) or California poppies in the narrow bed under the bushes at patio level if you want some flowers.
