Without dimensions, it’s impossible to say. But this is one of those lessons you learn in maths and say you’ll never need coming back to bite you later.
Use clay
Whatever you do, put a little ‘ladder’ of some sort – something to act as one, so that anything that falls in can crawl out.
have you tried filling it again and wetting the outside? the oak will swell a bit when in contact with water and seal any small gaps
Did it drain entirely or just down to a certain point?
I set one up last year and initially it lost some water but eventually the gaps closed naturally. Just kept topping it up over time. Also adjusting the metal bands can help.
Honestly try and get a plastic bucket that is sealed and fits inside (cut it down a little at the top if needed)
Liners are a pain in the neck and always end up leaking in barrels in my experience, as well as being hard to get looking right
The other thing I have tried is painting the inside with an aquarium approved black rubber/tar like paint. Again though, it worked okay but failed eventually
A plastic pot inside will last forever and won’t leak
I made a clay pot watertight (fingers crossed) by painting it with blackjacking. It seemed reasonably good at going across gaps so you could try that rather than a liner. A slightly smaller plastic pot would be much easier though, then you could hide the difference with gravel or soil to have the edge planted up a bit.

What about using pine tar to seal it? Iirc pine tar was used to seal boats in the past. It’s very sticky and smelly, so best used in warm weather on a windy day.
Local rats will love swimming in it
These barrels are usually just rusty used ones cut in half, designed for storing liquids. Bash down the metal hoops to make them really tight and keep filling, the wood will swell and should become watertight.
Head to your local aquarium, tell them you have a half barrel, and they will cut you the exact measurement. From experience, it is a pain trying to fit it. You will need a staple gun and a lot of patience. Brasso and a wire brush works well on the metal.
If it was dry you will need to keep it wet and it might swell to become water tight. If not my local garden centre sell plastic liners for half barrels.
I turned one into a pond a year ago. I tried for ages to do it “naturally” without a liner. I banged the metal straps tight and filled it. It swelled up then leaked. Then filled it again. It leaked, but slower this time. Filled it again, over and over again. Every time it would get warm outside, it would spring tiny leaks and I had to keep topping it up every 2-3 days.
So I finally gave up and paid £10 for plastic pond liner. And I’m hoping this year to attract some frogs. They also sell pre-formed barrel liners. Must less faff. And if I were to do it again, I would probably have gone that route.
And as others have said, put in a ramp in case something like a mouse gets in they will need to get out again.

If you don’t do something about mozzies you will have tens of thousands of them within a week. Water movement isn’t enough.

I bought 2.5×2.5m for the same size barrel pond and it was enough

Im going to go for a plastic insert for it although I’m struggling to find one as yet despite many searches.
My barrel measures – top inner 23″, bottom inner 20″ and 14″ deep
Hate to say it but I ended up having to line mine… the water kept going cloudy and I spent months trying to sort it.. bite the bullet and get some pond liner. Will be plane sailing from there
