Interestingly, rice itself doesn’t actually need all the water. It’s their for weed suppression and pest control. It can be grown perfectly well without the high water use through other methods.
I’ve seen a similar thing done with ducks in Bali. They farm thousands of ducks and move them around the paddies to clean them of insects, pests and weeds and then they have another product to sell.
