      You’re not in Leeds are you? We have a load of parakeets round our way. A pair were released/escaped a few years ago and there’s a whole flock of them now!

      I would be less annoyed to see this eating them over a squirrel

      Invasive damaging species and they squeak loudly and are very annoying, I’ll be keeping them off my feeders

      The parakeets are rapidly expanding. We really need a big drive to exterminate them as they seriously bully other birds. Do they taste good?

      i didn’t think these were in the wild in the uk. wouldn’t this be an escaped pet?

      I am in (the cool temperate mountains of) Australia and we get parrots every time we grow sunflowers. The solution is to cut them down as soon as the birds start on them because it’s like they’re psychic or something. You’ll go from one to thirty birds within a few days. Otherwise you can buy netting but depends on the parrot – some of them are destructive and intelligent enough to break through the netting. I usually reserve nets for my apples, pears and plums.

      We live about 20 miles north of London, and we have 2 flocks of parakeets that fly up from the direction of London in the morning, and back again in the afternoon. They live in a couple of trees at the front of our house. I joke that they’re the ones from st James park, but given the number of these in the country I doubt flocks would cover such a vast distance.

      They’re noisy but I love hearing them. Might be a bit different if it was constant for hours on end, but after 12 months living here I still get excited when I hear them 😂

      It never ceases to amaze me seeing these birds wild in the UK. We don’t have them where I am but I remember nearly falling off my chair when I looked out the kitchen window at my friend’s house in London and saw them on the bird feeder!

      They eat everything. Including things poisonous to other birds. I’ve watched them snip the end of Yew branches off to get at the sap. Toxic to most but they seem to love it. It’s been this time of year I’ve watched it for 2 years when the berries are about.

      Squirrels at mine bit the entire heads off and took them home. At least he’s being delicate about it

      Where I used to live in Hertfordshire we had whole flocks of parakeets.

      We have them where I live too, does anyone know why they’ve managed to multiply so well in the uk what is their major food source?
