I would clear everything out. Freshen up the soil as needed. Lay down some weed barrier. I use old cardboard boxes but the cloths work better because the cardboard boxes will breakdown quickly. And then cover with mulch or rocks. And happy planting! Just one idea, good luck!
You can make your future much better by getting the crabgrass out of there before seeds drop. Crabgrass is an annual so it doesn’t have deep roots. And it isn’t rhizomatous. I could pop that grass up with my hori-hori knife in no time. Depending on your soil, it may pull out. Then you want to plan for more plants of different heights. Mix things up. There are small shrubs like New Jersey tea and Clethra ‘Hummingbird’ and there are a host of tall perennials. I like the low-growing carpet roses that get about 18″ high. They seem too low for insects to notice them so I’ve had fewer of the typical rose pests on these low plants.
Pull the weeds, by a few bags of cow manure from a big bos store, layer the manure directly on top of the mulch then add more mulch.
Next year plant things again. I like zinnias.
If you want to get really fancy, you can test the soil.
