Mint, growing under a tree and next to grass that gets mowed – that’s just about the perfect spot to let it loose. Enjoy your mint!

I purposely filled a few foundation beds with mint to help my mom have easy upkeep and weed suppression, and happily let it run riot between the house and a paved path. Cheers! 🍹

No! No you’re not allowed to do that!

whats next, you don’t bury your tomatoes 15 feet into the ground so they can grow 10,000 pounds of roots! you don’t hill your potatoes with 6 tons of soil?

      YOU TOP WATER DONT YOU!?!??!?!

      /s lol

I had a half wine barrel full of mint but it got totally overrun by powdery mildew. I ripped every leaf and stem out of the barrel and as many roots as I could, threw some fresh compost on top. My husband saw it and was like, “Noooooo! [our son] was using that for his mocktails!” I just smiled. Give it a minute. It’ll be back.

      It’s back.

I have somehow successfully killed mint the last 4 years. It’s become a joke amongst our friends. I worked in the nursery industry for 20 years, I’m the person everyone calls when they have an infestation or disease, I’m the person who inherits all the poor unfortunate souls who’ve been left next to dumpsters. But I can’t seem to keep mint alive.

    6. Is it regular mint? I am letting lemon balm take over mine. I make a lemon balm pesto each summer and it’s divine!!

I wish I could grow mint. I buy every year and every year it dies, ugh. Help

I have such shitty soil I joked that mint wouldn’t even grow there. It’s been 5 years and it has barely grown at all, I don’t even have as much to harvest for tea as I’d like!

I absolutely love mint in the garden and have never had any issues controlling it. When I lived in western NY I had mint in multiple beds. I would often use it as ground cover.

I’m in NM now and the only way I’ve gotten the money to grow consistently is this year when I set up drip hoses with a timer and it now is watered very consistently. Plus the little patch I have is now 3 years old.

We have mint in at least 4 different sections of our yard.

Once at the beginning of each season, I spend about 15-30 minutes cutting and pulling runners that have left the artificial boundaries where I want to keep them.

Then I never have to worry about them the rest of the season.

Going on year 6 and I have them completely under control with very little effort.

      The anti-mint lobby is overrated.

    11. Lol mine is in a pot but my yard is absolutely INFESTED with henbit (mint family) so if we’re being real I have absolutely 0 right to judge! I guess it’s my gift to the early pollinators 🥴

    12. My grandparents immigrated from Spain. My grandmother was a fantastic gardener and cook (and all around “Martha”). She always had a huge mint border and used it for everything.

Try it in chicken soup with garbanzo beans (sounds odd, fantastic flavors). Add to salads, drinks, garnishes, desserts. She even added to flower arrangements!

I get one whiff of my mint border now, many years later, and all of the memories come flooding back, amazing. Just like perfume. 💓

      Finally a mint brother/sister!

I would start growing black/chocolate mint as well by the way! It’s the most intense and delicious flavour ever!

      Ipanemas are my favourite.

Anyone ever tried using mint to keep weeds from growing? I have an ongoing battle with poison ivy and I’d much rather have invasive mint 😭

lowkey controlled mints beds are amazing pest control- rodents and bugs!

I have a friend who has mint taking over his yard and he said it smells quite pleasant when he mows lol

    18. MurderousLemur on

My neighbor made some freaking amazing tea with mugwort that he shared with me recently. I know it’s invasive, but pulling it out and utilizing it at the same time is just so cool

    19. I use mint to help get rid of rabbits. Anywhere the mint doesn’t touch they feast and I almost want to plant more. My other plants never seem to mind.

    20. spazzcase_420 on

My job has a huge garden bed exactly like this that is 1/2 full of mint and I like to watch it take over more and more every year. Its also nice to just go rub some mint leaves on myself periodically to smell nice 😬 i dont know how they care for the garden so I won’t eat it

    21. My lemon balm has sent scouts into the rest of the yard. I’m not mad.

    22. PsychoGrad on

I’ve tried to get mint going, but apparently Phoenix summers are the one thing that can kill mint.

People complain about mint in the ground when they:

      A. Have heard that it’s bad and get to repeat what they’ve heard but have no idea what they’re talking about.

      B. Planted all their herbs in a small space and mint was the only survivor

      C. Have never heard of mint tea, mint juleps, mojitos, or mint syrup

      D. Because of C, have no real reason to grow mint in the first place and are mad that it’s easier to grow than the other plants they planted.

I grow mint in the ground and it never spreads because no matter how much I plant I end up using it all. I currently have 4 plants I bought this year IN THE GROUND. RAW. NO ROOT BLOCK. I am a gangster though 😎

    24. I love growing mint. I’d rather it than other weeds. Plus its never spread too far for me. Just stayed in one part of my bed.

Don’t do it like me, I’m a unicorn case.

    25. Illustrious_Bird_737 on

I’m jealous, my dogs chew my mint, decide they don’t like it, then chew some more. All the way down to ths root.

    26. gingerjuice on

I’m right there with you. I’m currently letting mint battle my morning glory (bindweed?) and marsh buttercup. Mint is winning and it’s glorious. Go mint!

    27. bbbbbbbbMMbbbbbbbb on

You know. I had a similar thought and was like, that just means more cocktails and more whatever with no shortage of mint.

Hey, that’s a great bug deterrent on top of being delicious.
