I’d guess a weeping Caragana, but yes remove some soil from the trunk until you see the first set of horizontal roots, they should be just at the surface so the plant can breathe.

There are many small weeping trees that look like this, has it flowered? If it has, share a picture of the flowers and we can more easily identify it

I am with others in saying it is a weeping cherry. The bark puts it in that family and it is probably the most common of this ornamental plant.
