So I cut back my fatsia last year and also had no clue. It’s best to give it a cut in springtime after the last frost. You can cut into the stem just above a node.

It might look a little odd and bare for a few months, but over summertime it should start to push out new leaves. I’d personally give the left hand side a cut now and then the right hand side a cut this time next year, just so you give it some time to recover. Good luck!

  2. These grow like canes and the best way to prune them is to take whole cane off at their base. If you prune to a node you get these weird off shoots like umbrellas as they get too heavy for the main cane to support usually and crack.

When I do these for clients I take out one or two of the larger canes each year this allows the smaller ones at the base to grow up. Keeps it more compact and stately rather than going like a weird triffid.
