Give it a mow, get some cheap grass seed for the patches and get some pansies and suchlike as they’re just pretty for a border.

I got these at Dobbies for £40 a few months ago.
honestly, get a gardening book. your nan probably has an old one, or you can pick one up from a charity shop.
it will explain things in a nice logical way, with chapters on different things. flapping about on the internet or with chatgpt often just give you too much overwhelming info.
all i really do is go to the garden centre and buy plants i like, and put them in the ground. some of them are happy and some of them die.
I’d start by sorting the lawn – weed, scarify, feed and seed. Then I’d just do some simple borders with things like erysimum, salvia, maybe a fuchsia. If you want something climbing you could put in a clematis and a bit of trellis. Start simple.

Don’t put weed membrane down, it’s awful stuff- it has good marketing, it’s plastic, so it never goes away, but it tends to basically shred, so you’ll be finding bits for ages. It won’t do anything to keep weeds down after the first year anyway, weeds will just grow on top, and through it. You can use cardboard and cover it with woodchip and it’ll do just as good a job initially, plus it’s free and will just break down fully into the soil.
It’s normally better to plant in the ground than in pots. Though it might seem easier, pots dry out fast, and can need watering daily in hot spells, plus they need more feeding and moving to bigger pots or they get congested. I doubt your soil’s all that bad anyway, or you wouldn’t have such nice lush weeds.
Pots can be quite expensive and need frequent watering during dry weather – just to warn you. Have a look at ‘no dig’ – it uses cardboard and organic matter to improve the soil and is often used for veggies but can be used for flower beds too.
I’d also try to get some tall plants or climbers around the edges to block out the fences a bit.
Have fun with it!
How big is your patio area? For the grass and I know this is a bit controversial I’d go for Astroturf you don’t look like you have room for a shed.
You potentially could apply some wood stain to the fence in the foreground. Appreciate it’s not probably a priority though. Note down what areas of your garden get sun and when. Then you can position things like benches and buy appropriate plants for each area.
