You can break off whatever sticks above ground. I like to cut large potatoes in half but they only need one “eye” to grow into a potato plant. If you want to keep them from growing like this in the future set potatoes in a dimly lit but not completely dark location so they don’t think they are underground.

    “Hey ma, where the olives?”

“Did you even look in the potato shoe closet before asking me?”

Is that growing through a second bag that had nothing to do with potatoes before?

Random but is that sweater the potatoes are poking holes through a Free People cardigan? I had one long ago that looks exactly like that!

Never leave potatoes in confined spaces, the gases they release will suffocate you

  6. Okay, but am I the only one thoroughly confused by everything thats going on in this picture? The potatoes grew through a sweater, above a bin of shoes, beside jars of olives, with a letter sticking under a door (?) But also you’re sitting there in jeans with the potatoes on your lap?

You can cut the potatoes in half and plant them, but if it is very wet out they may rot. Or you can plant the whole spud. Up to you.

If I left potatoes like that they’d be a wet, stinky soup. You’re lucky.

Cut chunks with the shoots off and put them into potato potter bags. Put them in a relatively sunny spot, water regularly and enjoy your harvest in a few months.

Adding in potato-growing advice lol. You don’t have to cut the eye-roots out. I typically take a paring knife and just slice each potato into 2-4 chunks, depending on size. Each slice needs an eye. Then, plant them in rows, about 3 inches down, water, and wait a few weeks for baby potatoes! I put my plants close together, and then harvest every-other plant for baby potatoes, and then leave the larger plants until they die off for bigger/storage 🙂

  11. Leaving the sprouts on works great! Each chunk with a few sprouts will become a whole new potato plant. Just make sure the cut sides dry out before planting to avoid rot.

Once I had a bag of potatoes look like that. To be funny I emptied threw the potatoes into a dirt patch in the back yard. I didn’t actually plant them. I forgot about all about it until I saw the plants started growing. Talk about low effort gardening!

I’m a little grossed out by the fact that you have food items next to shoes.
