It’s barely the middle of March – you still have plenty of time.

Privet is extremely resistant and it’s mid March. I find you can prune hard (60-90cm) and it will bounce back almost immediately. Cut with clean loppers.

Loads of time..thats only optimum time. Can prune it most months but woudnt be so harsh.. Now is the time to take 30% off and re size it as it will bounce back the beta

  4. Privet and its looking a lot healthier than mine, you can cut it anytime (avoid frosts) , I usually cut mine 2-3 times a year (depending on drought etc), usually May & September

To be honest I just trim when I can be bothered/looks too horrific to ignore. (Obviously checking for active nests first)

Is there a reason it needs to be done at certain times?

  6. The ideal time to prune a privet isn’t until April/May once the new growth has hardened off but you can do it anytime and it’ll be fine. They’re tough as old boots

We have lots of birds in our garden so did ours a couple of weeks ago.

I frequently brutalise mine because it’s a full days job and I rarely get the right weather window for it (and I hate doing it) so it needs a fair bartering to get it back under control. Normally done 2-3 times a year. It’ll be fine

What? I’ve never heard anything like that. If you think it’s overgrown, trio it. Just don’t hack chunks out

Yes too late – it’s illegal now it’s March as bird nesting time. You’ll have to wait until August. Check the laws online. Actually I spoke with a tree surgeon yesterday about trimming my garden hedges and he wouldn’t do it now it’s March. Even if birds not actively nesting they are getting ready and preparing in hedges.

This looks like a front garden green fence. This type of hedge is narrower and not peaceful enough for the birds to chose to build their nests in.

I though it was illegal to cut hedges after the 1st March 🤷‍♀️

Yes – it looks fine. Birds have already started to build nests, please leave it until September.

  14. It looks pretty neat to me. You should avoid trimming during nesting season which has now started. Late summer is the best time.

Timing is mainly about bird nesting season. Best to leave it until late May or June unless you’ve checked carefully for nests
