I’d clear all the turf and have just a large border. Then you could put in some large stepping stones to create a path and break it up a bit. Definitely include some larger structure with small trees or large growing shrubs like buddleja.

I think you’ve pretty much nailed it yourself, you need to soften the straight edges.

If you want to keep most of the grass, i think you’re looking at adding some pots at the corners and in front of the shed thing.

The fence is also really in your face. Planting some things that will grow up, will break the fence up, and make the space look less linear.

Adding an archway with climbing plants over your path would soften some edges and stop your eye going directly down the path to the end of the garden. You could also add some climbing beans if you fancied something edible and easy to grow!

I would go bigger with your left border. Taller plants, shrubs, lil tree maybe. I would also cut in a border on the right with more plants etc.

  5. It might help to put a tall evergreen shrub in a pot to hide your bins (where the animal box is now).

Painting the fences will help for a start. A nice pastel colour will soften the harsh boundary.

Great tips on this thread so I will just add something visual instead so that you get an idea of how a curved path would completely transform your space – along with the plants. You might not be able to change your path today, but it’s maybe something to consider once the time comes (many of these slabs, especially in new builds, are usually only temporary anyway and can be relocated elsewhere you need it so that you don’t waste it (like maybe as a little patio)

Need two or three large hero plants. Everything at the moment is way too small within the space

You could stain the fence – cuprinol garden shades have some ‘warm neutral’ colors you might like. Also could run some string lights around the edges if you have an outdoor mains outet , it can look quite pretty at night. I think your hanging pots are cute and you could do more of those on the other side, or maybe a couple of big pots on the ground on the right. Trellis a good idea too.

You need vertical interest …everything is so low level.
