Katzen und Pothos – echt. Hat jemandes Katze jemals ein ECHTES PROBLEM damit gehabt, Pothos zu kauen (abgesehen davon, dass sie es auf dem Boden hochgebrüllt hat)? Mein Tierarzt sagte mir, es sei kein Problem und im schlimmsten Fall irritierend, und er habe noch nie einen Patienten gehabt. Ich habe mein ganzes Leben lang Katzen gehabt – kein Problem. Ich frage mich, ob Google Alarm schlägt.

My last cat lived to chew up pothos and Philodendrons, like everyday. He just drooled and occasionally puked them up. But otherwise lived his crazy, jerkcat life 😂

My understanding with plants like pothos, monstera, fiddle leaf fig, the toxic substance is insoluble oxalates, which irritate the lips and mouth very quickly, making it unlikely that anything (cats,dogs, kids) will consume enough to get seriously ill. I don’t think google is alarmist per se, it’s just that “toxic” doesn’t mean it’s going to kill your pet, it just means it can be harmful. In this case manifesting in some drooling and discomfort.
I’ve been doing research as I fill my condo with plants around my two cats, I avoid anything that is highly toxic like aloe, and I watch my cats carefully when I introduce things with lesser toxicity and move them to a less accessible area if they’re too interested. So far, so good! Mostly they just chew my grassier non-toxic plants to shreds. 😂
Google *is* alarmist because answers range from “this will make your cat nauseous” to “this will put your cat in a COMA!”
Or maybe that’s ivy. I was researching a bunch of these plants recently myself so I may have gotten my google alarmisms mixed up.
I literally just asked my sister (who is a vet and is currently teaching/studying on the other side of the country) about this the other day. She agreed with your vet off the cuff, fwiw, and is going to consult her library for more info.
Her roommate’s fiancé is apparently a botanist and she’s told me she’s planning to ask him, too. If she comes through I’ll be sure to report back.
In general my cat leaves it alone, it’s slightly out of the way. When I put it in an accessible spot he did seem to start puking more often, so I moved it out of reach
It really depends on how much you want to coddle the fluffy asshole. Kitties are going to feel like shit and blame you for their mistakes, but they’re not going to die or be permanently injured. At least not from the plant.
True lilies on the other hand… just don’t go there (Spathiphyllum or “Peace lilies” are fine though).
Between my mum and I and 30 odd years we have owned more than 100 cats, and have had pothos 100% of the time and nothing bad has ever happened.

My cats have occasionally nibbled on my pothos, especially one little idiot who won’t learn his lesson, but the worst that’s ever happened is I’ve had to clean up some green mushy vomit. I think pothos are fairly low risk compared to other toxic plants. Peace lilies for example are incredibly dangerous and I won’t have one in my house. Keep in mind that a plant can be labelled toxic or poisonous but won’t actually be lethal for your pets. Do your research and carefully curate which plants are low risk enough to have around your animals.
This indoor garden is way beautiful. 10/10 would live.
I don’t know the answer to this, but you have an extraordinarily beautiful home. I’m saving this to show to interior decorators I might one day have the means to hire.
I’m not sure why I didn’t know this but I’ve had 3 cats over 25 years. I’ve had 4 peace lillies and my catsdon’t really bother them to my knowledge. Now I feel guilty for my plants although they are such a nice dark leafy green. I got 2 from family funeral as gifts. Had no idea they were toxic to cats until now.
THANK YOU!! I came across this post because I posted a pic of my cat drinking the water from my propagating pathos. It is THE ONLY water he will drink. I have 7 water bowls all around my house AND a fountain. But he will only go for pathos water. Of course I got the people yelling at me about how he will DIE!!!
Glad to come across this. I’ve had plant babies for a few years and then got a cat… freaked out a bit because all my plants were on the toxic list. But then I heard many cats don’t attack plants at all, and I’m home all day so figured I could keep an eye out. Cat has shown zero interest in the plants woot woot! So not going to worry about it unless I see something happen.
My cat nibbled on some pothos and now has diarrhea. What should I do?
I have a house plant do not know what kind it is. But I have two leafs gone. One of my cat ate it the whole thing. I can’t find anything on the floor. I didn’t notice it until today that the leafs are gone. But last night one of my cats started spinning in circles. I sat on the floor and held him. Then put him down and he walked away laced down got back up and started spinning in circles. Then he layer down and now he is fine. Could that happen because he ate the leafs?
My cat died this morning he was only 7 years old my girlfriend bought a golden pothos and was watering it and he ate quite a bit he has been in the ER on oxygen and they gave him shots of Benadryl but he still passed away he was so young and was a healthy cat
This thread makes me feel SO much better as my younger cat Masa will rip leaves up but never actually eat them and now that we’re propagating some theyre both drinking that water cause its “WILD AND FRESH”
On a funnier side note be warned if your cats ever get a taste for spider plants, apperently its like a mild hallucination for cats and Masa is a fiend for it. Its now locked away lol
Putting this based on other comments I saw. A monstera can absolutely k*** or nearly do so. I had to take my cat in because I sadly didn’t know. All it took was some nibbles and he got sick very quickly. Luckily my little man is healthy and the vet visit healed him up quick.
Are there hanging vine versions of monstera
so its only toxic to cats if they eat it?? ive got a LOT of devils ivy and have owned two cats and have never had any issues
I really needed this whole thread to calm my nerves. My 2yo cat of (adopted two months ago) never showed interest in my plants high or on the countertop or anything outside of her food until one night she decided to randomly nibble on a pothos leaf and a piece of tinsel—she vomitted afterwards. I have been on pins and needles for the past two days but she is eating, pooping/peeing, sleeping just fine. No drooling or puffy face like the other internet sources mentioned. I moved ALL my plants to a closed bathroom. I called the vet and they misheard me about her eating thinking she hadn’t and told me I needed to take her to an animal hospital to get IVs in her and etc. I reiterated that she is in fact eating. They just told me to continue to monitor. I’m still nervous but trying to stay calm over here ❤️🩹
Hi, I’m a vet tech and one of my own cats is currently in the hospital on oxygen after taking interest in one of my Pothos plants. She has asthma and my doctors attribute her more severe reaction to that. She is experiencing labored/ abdominal breathing and difficulty swallowing.
My cat chewed on my monstera. I think it bothered her enough cause she stopped doing that, but she has nearly consumed every leaf on my pothos cutting I am (was) trying to propagate. So far, she’s been perfectly fine.
Coming on here to say that my cat almost died of one today. He chewed on an aerial root for 2 minutes this morning before I caught him, and his throat closed off today. He conveniently had a hairball starting too and his throat was too swollen to pass it. He lost oxygen completely, lost control of his body, and I drove to the vet screaming and crying because he had no way to breathe and I couldn’t help him. The calcium in the plants irritated his mouth and throat.
He is home and alive right now, and every single one of my Pothos, monsteras, philos, everything are in my bathroom and will be gone tomorrow. As a huge plant mom I’m devastated, but I almost lost my soulmate today because of them and they’re not worth it to me anymore. My apartment feels SO empty but I’m grateful to be in it with him.
If you have a cat that sheds, get them out of reach. Please.

I just moved my anthurium to a room where the kitten is not allowed. Only live plant around now in the main room is a spider plant

I know this is an old post it was very helpful! I’m getting 2 kittens Saturday and was worried about my plants. Good to know the 4 pothos I have don’t have to be evicted to my mom’s house.
I just received 2 six month old kittens and I have eucalyptus all over my house. Should I throw it away?
I know this was a long time ago.. but I came across it to see if anyone has been in a similar situation. I believe this is what is causing seizures for my cat. She started having them a year ago. Stopped in February with medication. My dad happened to bring the plant in from the mudroom for winter a week ago and the seizures start again…. It’s the only thing I’ve been able to come up with. It checks out. Like most people said, it’s not as big as an issue for most people. But there IS a chance for some cats to have bad reactions
No – not alarmist. It can be an issue and young cats are especially vulnerable. My 4 month old became obsessed with the plant and horrible vomiting and lack of appetite/thirst. Spray bitter apple on your plants (where cats likely to chew) and even put the sticky paper designed for cats around based until they leave alone.
Came to ask this because I have some pothos in my fish tank right now that I JUST got yesterday and when I woke up one of the leaves was gone and part of it was on the floor so I think my cat ate one… she’s been trying to eat it all day… nothing so far but now I’m stressing soooo mf bad it’s actually insane… came here for an answer but there is no direct answer.
My cats continually eat my pothos. Go out of the way to get it. I personally think he gets high from it. But then again he has other issues. (Continually cleaning himself until hes raw and naked)
But they also eat the ferns too. No matter how high i put it. Sure occasionally they will yak it up but more often I see food yak then anything
