Its a local guy called Tom Delaney. He goes around doing this all over the place.

Too small for fox or badger, but it is big for a rat… size is about right for a rabbit but they usually prefer sheltered spots. This is a bit exposed.

    Only one solution: trail cam!

My money’s on a rat. That’s not such a big hole for a big rat. They can chew through concrete, I’ve seen it, so they can definitely shift soil.

This for all your help. I believe now that the hole was dug by a rat or small fox then a cat appeared to have a look. I don’t think they dug too far. I’ve now covered up the hole and will monitor it.

I’m not too fussed about foxes or rats outside. Ideally not to have them but it’s nature etc. Obviously if it becomes a bigger problem I’ll deal with it.

Yep that’s a rat hole. Had some living in my lawn drainage system which were fun to get rid of.

Hedgehogs can dig under fences as they like to go garden to garden. Might be worth setting up a camera as if it is a hedgehog I would leave his tunnel 🦔

Ratties. They can shift a lot of earth. They love to dig and tunnel extensively, and can create complex underground burrow systems for shelter, nesting, and food storage. They often do it often near structures or dense vegetation, and tunnels that can be several feet deep with multiple entrances for escape.

We’re constantly refilling their tunnels and holes in their garden, but they have done wonders stirring up the compost heap for us.

Requires a banana for scale to judge animal type. Anyway stuff the hole with wire wool.
