Hard to tell, but it could be Pisolithus arhizus (dyeball, or dyemakers earthball). It’s a fungus that forms a mutualistic relationship with plant roots and is a great addition to soil.

I’ve found it in my yard before and the first time was very alarming lol. It looked like a big turd filled with seeds.

If its flaxseed…do you think someone tried to putting flaxseed in a birdfeeder… Maybe it hardened into pucks and somehow ended up in your garden

Are these outdoor plants? Could it be dried up poo from an animal who was fed flax seeds?

  4. I would be more worried about that awful topsoil your using than whatever that is. It most likely came with the soil and you didn’t see it.

Like eveyone else, it really looks like clumped flax to me, but since there’s no logical explanation for how it would end up in your potting soil, I would recommend crossposting in r/whatisthisbug to rule out any type of bug living in your plants that might have some sort of nest or eggs that resemble this.

The other (unlikely) explanation, is that flax was mixed into your potting soil and rose to the top while being watered, so that they ultimately formed clumps, since flax does form gelatin when wet. I say unlikely because, afaik, there is no use for adding flax seed into potting mix. Flax is a great green manure in biodynamic farming, but that doesn’t sound like what you’re doing here, lol.

Did you try to break open one of the chunks? Soak/dissolve in water? If it’s flax seeds they’ll swell and form a gel, like chia seeds edit: also they’re just sitting on top and not mixed in?

If they are not flax seeds then it’s a type of roach or bug related.
Remove those clumps asap ! Please and report back on any new details!!
