I think after a good sweep and pressure wash it will be night and day – obvs doesn’t change it physically but its a start.

I am sure that your dogs will be fine doing their business out there as there doesn’t seem to be any bits that will harm them.

With regards to what you do with the rest, well it depends on what you are looking for, the aspect of the garden, the type of soul and your climate.

I’d start with the hard surfaces/paths I think.
weed the path edges with a spade or hoe.
Then power wash both path and patio slabs.
    Maybe weed the gravel area.
And then move on to a spot of shrub pruning where overgrown/strangling each other.

Sweep, weed killer or pull out the weeds, pressure wash (cheap bio washing powder and a stiff brush works OK too) and tidy up and it will make a huge difference.

Oh man you are going to have some muddy footprints everywhere. Maybe a couple of bags of bark chips or straw to keep it less muddy for winter and then some dog pee resistant grass seed in the spring.

Level ground and a small gravel or bark area would help your dogs a lot.

I would sweep/Rake any plant debris away, either into a bag or compost bin of you have one, then get rid off the plants you don’t want or trim/tidy them up. After I’d give the patio a pressure wash, maybe even the fence if you think it needs a paint, though at this time of year it might be best to wait until it’s warmer. If you’re keeping the raised bed for veg or what have you, its a good idea to turn over the soil when it’s not waterlogged, or put some compost in when it’s better weather. Putting stuff in at this time might not be a good idea 🙂 but it looks like a fun project!

Paint /whitewash the fences if they are yours to paint or you have permission. Will provide nice fresh background so long as you use anything but the orangey pine. Now is the time to paint and protect as you won’t have to battle through plants to get at the fence

  9. Why bother with any kinda garden with dog mess everywhere… train them to go in a specific place or forget any kind of garden

  10. Clean it up and then reevaluate. It looks a mess because, frankly, it is. A little bit of TLC will show you what you’ve got to work with. Feel free to then repost after you’ve tidied it!

  11. Have a look at Monty Don’s dog garden for some inspiration. They even used tougher types of grass for the lawn. Here are some helpful tips too: https://www.rhs.org.uk/garden-inspiration/design/dog-friendly-garden

This is probably obvious but be careful about using weed killers with dogs around. Might be better to just pull weeds out or cover with cardboard.

I think it will be a lovely space for you and your dogs to enjoy.

Another vote against pea shingle – I find it’s OK on paths but nowhere else – if ever you change your mind about the garden (23 years in the same house and now I’m 57 my gardening needs are changing) it will take FOREVER to get out and there’s the whole “all the cats in the immediate vicinity thinking they have a new litter tray” thing to consider – although in all fairness, once they get your dog’s scent they’ll probably not chance it!

sweep up, theres nothing else to do here. unless youre ripping everything out and starting again.

I’d just sweep up do some weeding put bark on the raised platform bit and the rest I’d just jet wash that’s a good space ut just needs tidied in my opinion .

Don’t lay artificial grass! In the summer it’ll be too hot for the dogs to be on, it’s bad for the environment, you need to clean it and it looks awful.
