I think it’s not worth the energy and effort. Deer will return to finish the job.

NorWAS spruce. Looks like a stag was rubbing his antlers on it. It’s a goner.

They’re not eating it, they’re scraping it. The result is basically the same, except that the scraped bark leads to stress, infection, and death – and that scraping is all on the top.
So you can cut the leader just above the good remaining branches (lose the top right one).
That will remove all the scraped bark.
Downside – it will take forever to regrow, so it only makes sense if you don’t have something else in mind for this spot.
Also, as they said above, the deer will be back. You will have to protect it until it’s quite large. We’ve had deer destroy 6-foot spruces.
But you’ll also have to protect whatever you replant. Trunk needs to be 3 or four inches wide at least before they’ll be left alone. So you’ll be fighting with the deer regardless. Worth it though. Good luck!!

Thanks that’s a great help. I think I’ll try to save it, I mean I’m not planting anything else there so why not. We generally don’t have too many deer passing through there so maybe I’ll get lucky and it’ll be a one off. Can’t hurt trying. Next time I’ll get a bigger tree.
