They are gorgeous now,but yes,the dead leaves are less than amusing littering Summer beds!

I’ve a list of plants and shrubs that I have a love hate relationship with. Pyracantha is probably top of that list. I completed a hard reduction on Monday at one of my regular jobs and my hands are in bits from digging the thorns out.

Rambling/ dog roses with the very fine but long thorns are high up on the list. Brambles too. Hawthorns are evil and that’s being generous. Berberis too.

I don’t deal with too many mahonias but I removed a large one on the side of a client’s driveway and replaced it with Mahonia ‘soft caress’ which has the same beauty but without the spined leaves!

If you’re ever in the market for a late autumn/winter flowering shrub that has no 🤬 stickery leaves and is also good for pollinators, may I suggest a winter flowering honeysuckle. Small white flowers with a sweet lemony fragrance. I levelled and grubbed out a Mahonia Japonica before, and my word the difficulty made me swear never to have one again!

It’s one of those shrubs I’m always happy to admire in other people’s gardens.

Mine has roses all planted around it from when the last owner of the house was an evil genius. Either needing trimming is an exercise in trying to keep your skin in tact. So pretty though right now

Luckily my mahonia doesn’t impact our flower beds just some spring flowering shrubs but our incredibly huge magnolia drives me up the wall as it’s such a messy tree. It covers half the drive, a public path and one corner of the garden. It’s absolutely glorious in flower but the mess it makes three times a year is infuriating! I wouldn’t be without it though.

Very good for over-wintering colonies of Buff-tailed Bumblebees. Often see workers on the flowers at the end of the year. Blue Tits like the flowers too, while Starlings love the fruits.

Sorry! I planted a mahonia a while ago. I’ve wanted to get one for ages. My dad had one and it reminds me of him now. I know it’s prickly and annoying but the fragrance is out of this world!

I have one of these! It was just a horrid spiky bush that poked me every time I got out of the car. But then it flowered and now it looks and smells delightful so it has earned itself a reprieve.
