tbh aloe leaf cuttings aren’t really, great for propagation, still a pretty cool idea

That is awesome!
Wish my home depot would do that

Idk if an employee did this or if it was accidental but last time I was there I saw a few succulent leaves/pieces lined up at the front of the shelf 🙂 I took a few and left behind some others that I found

This is awesome! 🤗 Most of the succulents I currently have were started from leaves I picked up off the floor at Home Depot! I wonder if my local Home Depot would be willing to keep this box on site if I made one, or if they’d just toss it out lol. I routinely see trash carts full of “old plants” that the vendors are getting rid of when they’re onsite for a restock, and while I know their protocol says they can’t just give that old inventory away, I feel like most would be willing to take a few clippings from those plants and add it to the box!
Picture of said trash carts! Such a shame to see so much prop-able potential getting trashed weekly!
I’ve always wondered why this wasn’t a thing already!

I wonder if I made a cardboard box that says prop box and hide it in home depot if anyone would notice.

You should suggest all the HD nurseries do this. I love it!

I think that is such a fantastic idea. And I can’t believe anyone here is being grumpy about it!!! I was at costco yesterday. They had a bunch of more dead than alive plants. They haven’t marked them down at all.No one even knew what price they were since they were taken out of their two packs. I would have taken a monstera and a couple.Others that I probably would have had to prop have they marked them down super cheap. They also had multiplant baskets where there was maybe one plant hanging on for life. I could pretty well guarantee you. Those are going to be in the dumpster today or tomorrow. Why not sell them for a couple bucks, and let those of us who like nurture things back to life have a shot at saving the poor guys!! Glad you guys did this!!

I used to be a garden center vendor at Lowe’s and we did this, too! People really do use it.

This is so cool! When I find plant parts on the floor at places like HD, I always ask if I can have them. Never had anyone say no. This is how I ended up with a ton of random sedum plants. I think every place with plants should have a prop box!

Our local one would toss it. The garden center staff tell me I can keep the broken bits but some others tell me I can’t. I know the plant vendors and the garden center supervisors so dropping names at checkout helps. I’ve been told I’m stealing even if it would be trash. I don’t snip them off plants, just take what’s on the floor. Some people break plants, dig for corms, dig out bits with roots and straight up destroy plants so they’ve gotten strict if they don’t know someone. Thankfully I’m there enough for them to know I wouldn’t do that. It’s sad!
So glad your store is good with it! I’ll have to show this to the lead manager next time I see him, maybe the vendors too!

I’m not sure about the plant vendors at your store but at mine every one of them was a trained horticulturalist. I’m betting a lot of them love plants and are happier to see them rehomed. I’m glad your management isn’t being difficult about this because I really don’t think that the possibility of plant propogation is going to stop that many sales anyway.
