    • The spot is along my fence (the fence is mine), which faces north but still gets a decent amount of sun throughout the day.

    • On the other side of the fence there’s about 15 ft of trees, so it’s somewhat sheltered.

    • This area used to have a raised bed with a retaining wall, but I removed it because it was holding water. I’ve tilled the soil and will be putting down grass seed soon.

    • My plan is to let the passion fruit climb the fence and eventually cover it.

    Meine Fragen:

    • Is this a good time of year to plant it in Chicago?

    • Is this spot suitable for passion fruit, given the sun and north-facing fence?

    • How often should I water it while it’s getting established?

    • Any tips for winter protection in Zone 5?

Ive only known two people who’ve successfully grown passionflower in the Midwest, and both had them planted in a winter protected area right along their homes foundation. I’ve personally tried growing cold hardy varieties in non protected areas and they always die. I’m in zone 6.
