    1. Maybe the start of a den but got disturbed so moved on. Fairly big though if it is must be a badger or fox. Maybe previous owners had a devil dog that like digging 😂

Gravity is my guess, the soil underneath has fallen into a bigger hole that possibly leads to a fascinating underground caven, or a hole someone dug to get rid of some crap.

    3. Is there a way I could check if it’s still active? Conscious I don’t want to just fill it in if there is live animals burrowing / living in it.

Badger set. Bad news, hopefully they’ve moved on. Its Illegal to disturb a badger set if active.

    5. Saw a post 10 mins ago with a similar lawn hole, with like 20 snakes living in it

I’ve got holes that big in my garden from bunnies, a fox, moles and literally just dry ground. There’s a hole big enough I can get my arm in it just cos it’s so dry .

Seen a few suggestions for badger, however I don’t think this is. A couple of things:

      1. Badger setts tend to be “D” shaped, flat on the bottom with a nice curve at the top. Not always, but often.
      2. Badgers excavate and often leave a noticeable spoil heap outside their sett entrances, which I can’t see in these pictures.
      3. Badger sett entrances tend to be at least 30cm in width as they are bigger than rabbits, foxes etc.

This doesn’t look like it goes anywhere also – I agree with other commenters that someone digging it could’ve got disturbed, or potentially just dry ground collapsing in.

You can get motion sensor wildlife cameras that are battery powered and pretty cheap if you want to know for sure, if not keep an eye out for poo, footprints, hair etc. Have fun! The cameras are fun even just to capture little birds and mice etc.
