Roots are the worst. Takes forever. I shovel slow when I have a lot of roots. Keep clippers nearby. It’ll be a lot of work, but not impossible. Just bury the remaining rocks, I imagine. Another option would be to find some compost and fill rather than dig. Our local forestry group gives out compost for free, but not everyone has that luxury.
Have you considered doing the opposite & adding material to slope it? Rather than digging into it, add topsoil to this side and rake it to a perfect slope? Just thinking sideways in case it’s easier.
