      Can’t blame them, it’s way better than anything they could’ve built. It’s like squatting in a mansion VS building a cardboard hut yourself.

      I missed the original post for this story, but for the next time: I get birds in hanging plants on our porch just about every year, and I still water everything. I am of course much more careful with the plant that has the nest, but I’ve had several generations of songbird grow up in plants that were actively maintained. The mama bird flies away when I approach, like she would with any other potential threat, but she always comes back.

      omg they are so precious 😭 i had a fledgling seagull hanging out outside my window for a couple of weeks and he was both super noisy and a joy to watch

      Worth it.

      We always end up with at least one nest in our hanging Boston fern planters. This year we have one in each. I still gently water but just take care not to bother the actual nest.

      Adorable. Years ago I had a pair of American Robins nest not in a plant but behind a huge Crown of Thorns, Euphorbia milii, on a bench behind my garage. I would water the plants as normal and whichever parent was on the nest would just sit there as they would in rain. They successfully raised three chicks. I guess nesting behind a large spiky plant was good predator deterrent, as the bench top was only three feet off the ground.

      I suspected a dove from the first photo.

      At our place the parents shove the babies out way too early to fledge and immediately lay a new clutch of eggs! Randy buggers!

      Every spring/summer I put hanging plants on my porch. And every year a bird will nest in the pot on the right hand side. There were a few years after my husband died that I didn’t hang any. Just didn’t have the heart for it. But when I resumed they also resumed nesting in the same plant. And this year one has taken up residence in the other plant as well! I hang different plants every year so I suppose it’s just location, location, location!

      Had the same thing happen a month or so back. Finches laid eggs in my hanging strawberries and it’s safe to say we have more Finches and less strawberries this year lol

      Totally worth the sacrifice to see the babies grow to their first flight!

      Yep doves are the reason my wisteria is wild this year, and just as I was going to give it a hard prune 2 wood pigeons moved in. I guess I’ll wait a little longer, it’s not like stepping onto the patio feels like walking into Jumanji or anything.

      The doves that live by my house let me pet them when I’m on my porch tending to my plants.

      Obviously you’re not going to water that specific planter, but you’re not really in any kind of danger going out there.

      I had a dove have babies like this in my hanging basket one summer, and she just sat there and let me water around her. 🙂

      I had a nest in a fern. I was just careful watering to not get the babies wet. Both the fern and the birds thrived.
