      Beat up is fine. If you never lost a single leaf off a department store plant, you should buy a lottery ticket; if not, don’t worry cause those will die off later when your plant is all grown up and you have pretty new leaves.

      HOWEVER, I cannot say this enough, beware of pests from department store plants. I’ve had this problem with Walmart, Costco, and another Canadian chain retailer. You must keep any plants isolated for minimum one month to make sure you don’t get pest infestations. If you do, change the soil, treat it, and keep it away for several months before moving it near your other plants.

      As for the price point… Variegated plants are definitely more expensive, so I don’t know if this is a good deal. I got a common monstera deliciosa the same size for $15 at a local plant shop and one 10x that size at Walmart for $40. Really can be hit or miss.

      If you don’t have a ton of plants at home already, then go for it!! But if you have many plants, consider where you’ll keep it for potentially a few months before buying. Good luck!

      i’ve been seeing thai constellations in every big box store. i’d personally wait a bit till i come across a particularly gorgeous specimen or perhaps a better price. the variegation on most of these is pretty good though.

      Mine had these, and of course, no prices on them or on the shelves they sat on, so I picked one up and took it over to an elderly worker. He scanned it for me and the gentleman about crapped his pants when he handed it back to me and said $30. I told him it was kind of a hard to get specialty plant, and he just shook his head. No, I didn’t buy it because I actually had already found one for $25, but the look on this man’s face gave me a giggle. Safe to say he wasn’t a plant person.

      Sorry, I know this had nothing to do with what you were asking, if I hadn’t found the $ 25 one, I would have bought the Wal-Mart one.

      $30 for a Thai constellation is a very good price. Before costa began their production of them, they were selling for $100+ for a node.

      I think 30s a good deal if you can pick one out with variegation you like 🙂

      Keep an eye on large, independent nurseries in your area- preferably ones that also sell commercial for landscaping, trees, etc. There’s one in my area and they had a sale on Monstera’s 2/$40, they were a good 2 feet high each with big leaves, but the best thing was, there were 3-4 plants in each pot, I was able to separate them into multiple pots and now I have a pretty nice mini jungle happening. I’ve had mine about three years.

      $30 is quite ok, but whether you have the space in the house or not is another question, monsteras are fast grower and they will grow very big and consume lot of space.

      One of the things I like about getting thai constellation from stores over regular monsteras is that they don’t seem to put as many in the pot. 

      I assume it’s because thai constellation are more expensive, but when I was last at the blue and orange box stores, I wanted to get normal monstera. Each one had a minimum of three planrs in a pot, and I think the max had like, seven. 

      All the thai constellation were alone in their pots. I don’t know why- maybe it’s the tissue culture, but I don’t love fucking around trying to untangle seven baby monsteras.
