first thing to do is check if there really is concrete under that gravel and how far it stretches across the garden if there is.
You need soil under the grass otherwise you won’t have osmosis from the soil below to keep it from drying out and dying on hot days
Do it cheap, do it twice.
I’d be looking to rent a breaker and a big old skip at the least, then hill it all out with many many tonnes of topsoil before you think about grass.
RIP Redditor
World of pain!! Container garden and raised beds!
I’ve just redone my decking, and my word, the number of mega spiders was insane 😱 Big shiny black ones with butts the size of my thumb nail holding onto egg sacks made things take twice as long 😬
It’s probably mot type 1, then granodust that’s had a whacker go over it. It’s not going to be friendly for grass to grow. Might need to get a skip to get rid of it all.
Don’t worry. All you need is a sledge hammer to shatter the concrete, a crowbar, a lump hammer, small chisel and lots of rubble bags. Don’t forget ear plugs, leather gloves and eye protection. 👊. The hardest part is making the first hole so if you can start on an edge you’ll find it easier. Then you’re just knocking bits off as you remove the support from underneath. Yes it takes a while and yes you’ll build a bit of muscle but it won’t cost you shed loads and it’s doable. If you get raised beds you’ll have to keep watering them forever and they will rot. Get whacking!
No. You put turf down on concrete, it will shrivel and die. You’ll have to smash it up, lift it all and dig down at least 6-8 inches, fill it with topsoil and then turf it. I may well be underestimating here, too.
Best get some guys in to help.
Looking at the picture I’d suggest.. at the far end it looks like it’s against soil on its edge, if it is have a dig down in the soil and see how thick the concrete is and what is under it before you decide what is the best way to get it out. If you do it yourself it can be a lot of work to take it up, move it to wherever the skip is and get it into the skip. If it’s financially viable for you it might be worth hiring someone to do it.
Idk maybe you can use something like betonamid here?
Does it drain well?
If so and you just want a patch of green then try some low lying Sedum Album or a combination of similar varieties. Pay attention on your next walk and you’ll probably find some nobody will miss.
Looks like large stone over dirt (although you’ve said it’s concrete but we can’t tell from the photo), with a pathway in the middle. I’d start by removing all of the rubble and assessing the state of the soil. If it is concrete then you’re going to have to remove that too.
You may need to remove more junk soil, and then replace with topsoil and sand; but it’s hard to tell. Pathway is likely just a sand and cement mix which should be easy enough to remove.
You know anyone with a jackhammer?
Those slabs look riven – could come up nicely with a power wash.
I’d do the container garden/raised bed suggestion.
Are you leaving the path Insitu…?
The small stones are MOT1 gravel as someone has mentioned ibid, and has been compacted.
Get a garden fork and try and dig down and turn over the dirt and stones: see if they mix. If so, just dig over the area, rake level and order in rolls of lawn.
Stones blended into dirt just makes for a well drained lawn.
Grass doesn’t grow on concrete.
Could try selling on the old slabs, they look decent enough and weathered slabs look so much nicer than new ones, everything else can be done by hand or by machine depending on your budget

Have fun and stay fit… I bought a house which was rented for 14 years… had a cannabis grow underneath and this image is about 20% I ripped out
Puncture plenty of holes to allow area to drain layer of gravel the topsoil and seed
Nope, look through this sub for all the ‘why is my grass dying in this place’ and the answer is usually because someone put grass over an old path or driveway etc without removing it first.
Basically, not enough soil depth means your grass won’t establish a deep root system, there won’t be much soil to hold moisture and it’ll just turn brown as soon as you get a hot/dry spell.
We hired a jigger pick to rip out a garage base. A bit fun at times. Use eye protection! The stuff gets everywhere.
We know there’s garage footings under our decking, so any rotten boards etc will be replaced. Cheaper and easier in the long run lol
Not to mention fixing the drop from the sun room that runs the length of the house which is about 2′
