This is just another day in the south this is a cicada. Wouldn’t be summer without these screamers.

If you weren’t gardening, you wouldn’t be able to share with us this very cool photo.

There’s a reason so many sci fi shows have bug aliens as the bad guys! (Cause they look hella alien when you see them in the garden haha).

This is an amazing and beautiful creature. They have a multi year lifespan (can be up to 17 years) – most of which is spent underground. They emerge, mate and the tiny ones crawl into the ground for the next cycle of growth thru seasons over multiple years. This year they will provide food for birds and other animals. Their song is the sound of summer. People do fear them but they are completely harmless despite their size and fierce appearance. Your garden (healthy soil, trees) will support them in their long cycle of life. What you do now in your garden – will help in the cycles that can last over a decade.

Ha. Docile lil screamers. I have picked them up and placed them on my hat brim. Sat there and sang at me for an hour while I mowed my lawn.

My kids collect the cicada shells from my garden. I have around 10 in my house right now.

It’s a beautiful cicada! Count yourself blessed to have witnessed its transformation. 💚

It’s possible to wear the crusty shell like a lapel on a jacket. The claws will clasp onto the fabric.

Awesome!! I only get to see the exuviae after they’ve already left ☹️

The wings are gorgeous! I think they are very cool.
I caught one emerging! It was such a cool experience. It means they like your garden and what you’re doing!!

I use to find them annoying. Now I feel like something’s wrong if I don’t hear them.

Shoot, if you can’t handle a cicada, what happens when your friendly neighborhood snake shows up to keep your garden free of pests and freeloaders?
I’ve found salamanders, lizards, snakes, multiple kinds of toads, baby bunnies, baby birds, HUGE wolf spiders laden with babies, and all manner of other critters in my garden. A couple have startled me (looking at you, mama spider), but all were left to go on their merry way.
You get used to them, and then you respect their roles, and before you know it, you’re welcoming them like some kind of sweaty Disney Princess.

That’s actually a really cool shot of one just emerging from its shell. I think they’re still soft at this stage.

You can take the skin and stick it to your shirt! We used to do that as kids

I love them. Sweet little native bug just living its little life. They can’t hurt you in any way, they are extremely beneficial to the ecosystem, especially trees.
Please dont worry about this small life

My dogs love to eat them! I can hear them buzzing around in their mouths as they chomp them poor things!
But yes, harmless…noisy, but harmless!

Look, if you could stand on your own exoskeleton amongst such lush greenery, wouldn’t you?

I love finding the exoskeletons and seeing a cicada drying her new wings this way would be amazing – I never have.
There are whole other worlds happening around us that we barely notice. Once you start noticing it’s endlessly fascinating.

I always adore their colors!
I’m just here to make sure OP understands that cicada just came out of that skin and it’s not a thing that it drained the life out of
