Etwas verwirrt

Following as I’m in the same situation.
That’s looking a decent size compared to mine! Admittedly I’ve just replanted the last inch or so of supermarket ones we’ve bought. A couple of them are now bolting.
Not enough soil
Apparently they should be harvested in late summer to early autumn, so now is a bit early.
I’ve done so successfully in previous years, though I very seldom get the big, round bulbs like supermarket ones. They are mostly smaller with a much thicker sprouting top. But you can eat the sprouting bit too so that’s fine 🙂
I don’t think you did anything wrong. It just isn’t ready yet. They need a bit longer – they bulk up a lot once the heat of summer arrives.
We’ve had a hot spring, though, that’s why they are trying to bolt – mine have been similar – so it becomes a balance between preventing them bolting while giving them the extra time they need to fully mature. If you snap off the scapes, they are edible.
Haven’t u pulled them a little early? We have red, white, shallots and spring growing atm. Out white and reds have very very big stems they’re huge but our actual onions are just a little bigger than yours.. I was under the impression I can let them go a little longer they’re still extremely healthy and standing strong. My first year of growing so I really don’t know yet whats going on lol been eating our lettuce and herbs had some radishes and peas picked a few strawbs but the bulk is yet to come
They look like mine. I’ve been thinking of just digging them up and using the patch for something else, but from responses here, I’ll wait a bit longer.
I suspect that the weather we had earlier this year caused it to bolt and stop growing.
Either a cold spell shortly after planting, or the unusually warm and dry couple of weeks in may, or both
Was the bulb underground much at all? If so spooning seriously helps
Should I snap off the top sprouts?
Nothing, just harvester the scapes and use them like you would with spring onions.
This will prompt the plant to put energy into the bulb not into flowering.
Too early, you know when they are ready as you will see them above ground and big.
Some will say don’t harvest till the leaves drop but in all honesty harvest when they are the size you want. remember they should be as good if not bigger than store bought.
Harvest too late and they won’t store well as they will be going green inside.
It’s too early to harvest onions. Onions will look dead when they are ready. Dead in the sense the foliage will Bend over and lay flat on the ground. Not green and upright.
Soon as the seed pod develops it’s pretty much game over for being an onion 🧅.
You can eat onions at any size. I plant them too close then thin them out by pulling out green ones, leaving a few to bulb up
Have they been getting enough water? We have just had the driest and warmest Spring on record
You wait until the stalks have fallen over, then 10 days later you pull them.
Pick when the leaves flop over and turn brown.
