This looks like environmental stress, not death. The leaf drop and yellowing on the lower branches could be due to transplant shock, overwatering, underwatering, or even heat stress depending on your region. Check that the soil drains well and isn’t waterlogged, and make sure the root flare isn’t buried. Young trees like this also need consistent moisture while establishing but shouldn’t sit in soggy soil. If new growth is still coming in and the branches are flexible, it’s likely to bounce back. Mulch lightly to retain moisture but keep it away from the trunk.
