      Acidic soil. Water with distilled water. They’ll get most nutrients from their carnivorous diet. If you noticed it hasn’t eaten in a while you can grab crickets or meal worms from your local pet store. Good luck!

      I have one that is absolutely thriving from bottom watering ONLY DISTILLED water! Keep it in water, in a sunny window and I feed it mealworms here and there live not dead they need to feel it move in order to fully close and take the bug

      Keep it swampy and mossy. No dirt, they get all they need from the food they eat. And distilled water only, filtered tap water is no bueno. I capture rain! (as long as it’s fresh not like run off from a building) also have experimented with pots without drainage, it’s thrived.

      Full sun, in a dish with constant supply or rain/distilled/RO water. They can catch their own food.

      Only distilled water!!!!! I read they need to hibernate in the fridge 3mo out of the year. I believe they only grow indigenous in North Carolina? Fascinating little boogers.

      Morning sunlight will be too little. They need lots and lots of sun to continue health growth patterns. If you’re in Zone 8, you can grow it outside.

      As for water, it should be in a dish of distilled water (usually want a constant 1/2″ reserve in the bottom) as others have mentioned. Depending where you are you could theoretically get away with tap water, but it needs to be tested to ensure it has a low TDS (some places in the PNW can get away with this for instance).

      Lots of light, water with distilled water or rain water. They are somewhat tolerant of getting a little dried out. I leave mine outside for the summer until fall and always pinch the flowers. California carnivores on youtube is a good resource.

      submerge ab 1/3rd of it in a Tupperware full of distilled water only! don’t over feed the same traps bugs unless you’re ok with losing some traps bc they can only close a certain amt of times. I keep my VFT in my bathroom on the windowsill bc it’s alot of good sunlight and it’s humid and it helped mine out a lot! In the winter months make sure it goes dormant (you can do this by putting it in the freezer for a couple months) and that’s pretty much most of the care I’ve ever had to do for a VFT! Very easy plants

      Water: use only distilled, rain, or water with low ppm. Vfts like to sit in water and always be moist, never let them dry out. A popular watering method is the tray method, fill a small bowl or tray with about an inch of water and set the vft in it. Refill once the tray is dry

      Light: they love full bright sunlight. Growing outside is best. If you want to grow inside grow lights are strongly recommended (I use sansi 36w grow bulb and it’s awesome) and the lights should be no farther than 12 inches away

      Food: bugs are a boost, not a necessity. If it’s growing outside it will catch the bugs it needs itself. If it’s growing indoors supplement it with a bug or two every few weeks-a month. They don’t need live bugs, but if you use dead ones you will have to gently massage the trap once closed to stimulate the trigger hairs

      Dormancy: some growers recommend it whereas others say it’s not necessary. Dormancy in vfts lasts for 3-5 months and usually starts around November and ends in February. They like cold temps below 10°C and shorter photoperiods. They can withstand brief freezes but they shouldn’t freeze for long periods of time. If you choose to let it go dormant there are multiple methods online

      Potting/Soil: vfts like nutrient poor soil, one part sand to one part peat or four parts peat to one part perlite can be used. Plant in plastic or glazed ceramic pots with drainage. Terracotta and unglazed pots can leech minerals into the soil and burn the roots. They like to be repotted every 1-2 years at the end of dormancy, offshoots can be divided.

      I love Venus flytraps! They’re not that hard to grow, although it helps that I live near the region they’re native to. Here’s a few of my tips:

      Water with distilled water only, put the pot in a bowl and keep about 1/2” in the bottom. They’re bog plants and need to stay wet constantly.

      Lots of sunlight in the summer, during growing season they need lots of light, heat and humidity. During winter they need a dormancy period to “rest” and must be protected from frost. I’ve done this successfully by burying the pot in the ground and covering it in an insulating later of leaves and moss, and digging it up again after last frost. Depending on your region this may or may not work for you.

      Don’t trigger the traps just for fun, they use a lot of energy to do this and will die after a few cycles. Better if it’s only done to feed. Also pill bugs make my traps die for some reason.

      Don’t over feed it, think of insects more like a multivitamin for the plant to supplement the poor soil it grows in. A bug once a week is fine or if it catches more on its own, that’s great too.

      That’s a beautiful Venus fly trap. Keep them away from intense temperature changes!! Water with only distilled water (tap water has too much minerals and can cause mineral burn on the roots) don’t panic if a head dies (goes black) it’s eaten to many insects and dies off. Also they hibernate during colder months but don’t panic. Lots of care and they will be fine.
